A 28-year veteran of the banking industry, Douglas F. Sawyer assumed the leadership of United Way of San Diego County in July 2005 as president and chief executive officer. With a desire to give back to the community, he decided to leave the banking industry to take the position.

Prior to joining United Way of San Diego, Sawyer was president and chief executive officer of Legacy Bank when it opened as a full-service commercial bank in December 2002. He was instrumental in assembling the bank’s management team, raising capital, and gaining regulatory approval to launch the bank.

Sawyer’s banking career began in 1977 as vice president & branch manager of Great Western Savings & Loan for two years.

Sawyer remains active in the community through numerous board memberships.

Sawyer attended San Diego State University and the University of Virginia’s Graduate School of Retail Banking. He is married with three grown children.
